WERC - PREP Employment Readiness Program
Your Path to Skills, Confidence and Employment
The PREP Employment Readiness Program provides free employment services, one-on-one support, job readiness workshops and employment-focused skills training to help job seekers prepare for, find and maintain meaningful employment.
Qualified Participants work with the PREP Employment Team to identify their employment goals, develop an individual employment plan, build job-search skills, complete relevant training and connect with employment opportunities.
Our goal is simple: help you build the skills, confidence and experience you need to move toward employment.
Who Can Participate?
The PREP Employment Readiness Program is available to individuals who meet the program eligibility requirements, including:
18 years of age or older
A resident of Winnipeg
Eligible to work in Canada
Unemployed, underemployed or low income
Have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN)
Seeking a Job Immediately
Eligibility and participation are confirmed during the initial appointment and assessment.

Skills Certificate Training
As part of PREP Employment Training, eligible participants may have access to employment-related skills certificate training.
Important: Skills certificate training is not a stand-alone service. Participants who are approved for certificate training must be registered in the PREP Employment Readiness Program, complete the required program activities and actively participate in their agreed employment plan, job-search activities and Placements.
Safe Food Handler Certificate
Delivered online through Safe Check Manitoba
The Safe Check Food Handler certification provides training in safe food handling, food safety practices, hygiene, cross-contamination prevention, food storage and temperature control. The certification can support employment opportunities in restaurants, food service, grocery stores, bakeries, food preparation and other workplaces where food safety knowledge is required. Safe Check identifies its Advanced Canadian Food Safety certification as approved for use in All Provinces in Canada and valid for five years.
First Aid & CPR Level C Certificate
Delivered by the Canadian Red Cross Manitoba through a live instructor
First Aid and CPR Level C training provides participants with practical skills to respond to emergencies, including CPR, AED use and choking emergencies involving adults, children and babies. The training can strengthen employment readiness for positions where first aid and CPR certification is required or preferred. Red Cross CPR Level C certification is issued after successful completion of the required skills and knowledge assessment and valid for three years.
New Operator Forklift Operator Training
Delivered by Safety Services Manitoba – 2 full days
Forklift operator training prepares participants to understand safe forklift operation, workplace hazards, inspections, stability and safe operating practices. The training can help participants pursue employment opportunities in warehouses, distribution, logistics, manufacturing and other workplaces where forklift operation is part of the job.
The PREP Employment Success Journey
PREP is designed as a step-by-step employment journey. Participants receive support from their initial information session through job search, placement and follow-up.
1. Information Session
Learn about the PREP program, available services, expectations and employment supports.
Employability Assessment: Complete an initial employability assessment to help identify your strengths, skills, employment needs, barriers and areas for development.
2. Program Registration
Complete the PREP registration process and provide the required documentation.
3. Info Session and Employability Assessment
We evaluate whether you qualify for training or need additional supports.
4. Job Readiness Workshops
Participate in job readiness sessions designed to strengthen your employment skills, including resume writing, job searching, applications, interviews and workplace expectations.
5. Skills Training
Where appropriate and approved, complete employment-related certificate training such as Safe Food Handler, First Aid & CPR Level C or Forklift Operator training.
6. Employment Assessment & Plan Review
Review your progress, update your employment plan and identify the next steps needed to move closer to employment.
7. Job Search Support
Receive ongoing support with job searches, job applications, resume updates, interview preparation and connecting with suitable employment opportunities.
8. Job Search & Placement
Apply for suitable positions and work with your Employment Advisor to pursue job opportunities and employment placements.
9. Follow-Up & Ongoing Support
After job search and placement activities, the Employment Team follows up with participants to monitor progress, provide support and help address employment-related challenges.
10. Employment Success
Achieve your employment goal and transition into meaningful employment while building the confidence and skills needed to maintain employment.
